Stockholm City Library, Design Competition 2007
A submission for the international competition in 2006-7 for an extension to the 1924 Asplund library. The proposed design draws landscape slopes through the library. External green roofs allowing the building to act as route from street level to the upper level of the hill. Inside the building planted winter garden spaces will progress up through the levels and be visible on the exterior. Natural daylight , passive ventilation, ground source heating and cooling from the adjacent hillside will minimise energy used in heating and cooling. The design reflects Sweden’s cultural harmony with nature : Roofs will be earth covered for added insulation and thermal mass and managed rainwater runoff. Timber and recycled products will be used in the construction of frame, external walls and internal finishes to reduce the carbon footprint.
